The Gilman Mine "tailings pond" in the back center. Tailings were waste products from processing ore and were piped down Battle Mountain approximately four to five miles to the tailings pond. Some eight million cubic feet have been estimated to have been dumped in this area, which was west of the Gilman Mine.

Using a level to make sure the mine tailings flume is canted to the right angle. Tailings were piped from Gilman as a slurry and, as the slurry dried, it became the same consistency as a fine sand.

Easter Day, 1949, on Eagle Street, Red Cliff. The Ivan Dump children are in their front yard with Easter baskets lined up on the boardwalk. From left to right, Betty Mae Dump Elsberry, Ed Dump Dumph, and Ernie Dump Dumph. Len Dump Dumph is perched on the fence post. Mine tailings are visible on East hill side of Eagle Street.

Tearing down the existing tailings pipe and stands at the tailings pond below Gilman. Once enough sediment had been released through the bottom of the pipe, new stands were erected to lift the pipe to a higher elevation. Harv Collins is in the center of the photo wearing light colored coveralls.

New section of pipe and stands for the tailings pond. Trusses with new sections of pipe are being built. Later a safety cable was added along a catwalk , which was used by employees to remove the plugs in the pipe and drain the tailings. Tailings were piped from Gilman as a slurry and, as the slurry dried, it became the same consistency as a fine sand.
