At 16 level, the ore train would dump rock into the large pit (Grizzly) at the bottom of which was located a jaw crusher. The crusher would send the ore into the ball mill and rod mill where the ore was pulverized to a fine powder. Inside the ball mill, there would be ore and steel balls, approximately 10 in. in diameter. As the mill rotated, the ore was crushed by the balls. Casts for pouring bearings in the mill. The idea of the machine shop and mill was to make the Gilman Mine as self sufficient as possible in terms of repair and renovation of equipment.

The rod and ball mill. The rod mill is on the left and ball mill on the right. These were used to grind the zinc concentrates for additional chemical processing. Prior to this, the material had chemical agents added to allow the zinc mineral surface to adhere to flotation bubbles. These were some of the steps for making the zinc ready to ship in railroad cars.
