26) Drowning

Tree that marked the final resting place of a Navajo Indian who was working for the D& RGW Railroad and was drowned in the river. A wooden cross marking the grave was placed in the dead tree, but was not evident in 1989.

C.1894: Sam (Sammy) Doll holding a newly planted tree (no leaves) with his right hand, left hand on hip, posing for the camera. He wears a small-brimmed hat, pulled down to his ears, wool coat and laced boots (which look too large for him). Sam was born in Osnaburg, Ohio, October 31, 1882; died in Gypsum, Colorado, 1899.

Fir bough shelters with tethering facilities for horses. Possibly used by road building crew or Mount of the Holy Cross pilgrims.
In 1927, Dr. Randall led Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls up Notch Mountain to see the cross, a trip considered to be the first "pilgrimage." In 1928, another pilgrimage took place and in 1929, President Hoover established the Mount of the Holy Cross Monument.
