The yards were built in exchange for the right of way needed by the railroad to go through the Benton Land & Livestock Company property. It was a great help to local ranchers and, when the railroad no longer would ship cattle by rail, it caused hardship for the ranchers...

Stacking hay using a horse team and a Mormon derrick on the J over J Ranch (now the 4 Eagle Ranch) north of Wolcott, Colorado. The Ranch was originally homesteaded by John Welsh and later run by his son-in-law, Charles Hartman. Tractors were never used on the ranch before it left the family in 1930.

"Willis H. Staup, son of W. T. and Sovella Staup was born Aug. 18, 1895 at Whitewater, Colo. The family moved to Gypsum in 1908, where they operated the Gypsum Hotel.
Willis ran the first garage and shipped in the first autos to Gypsum. He was inducted in the Army Oct. 2, 1917 and most of his Army service during World War I was in France and Germany. He received his discharge Apr. 29, 1919.
