Kluge was a partner with Thomas E. Lewis in the Lewis & Kluge mercantile at Eagle. Together with Mr. Lewis and Robert McHatton, Kluge also owned the Gypsum Mercantile Co. store at Gypsum. Lewis bought out Kluge's interest in the Eagle store.

"Madison Cassius Gates, born in 1852, like his older brothers Albert and James P., also had a desire for adventure. He migrated [from Ohio] westward to Hebron, Nebraska, around 1881, and later moved to California.

In the caption, the woman is identified as his daughter, Anna, but given birth and death dates, the woman might also be his wife, Amelia "Milllie" Brown Gates. [Anna was born in 1882, so in this photo she should be 28.]

"Our house where we live now" dated November 1914. The Michael family-- Edward A. and Edna-- lived in Eagle and operated the Eagle Valley Feed Mill. The back of the photograph is dated November 1914.

The Michaels owned and operated the Eagle Valley Feed Mill, which expanded into a livery and stable, from 1912 to 1920 before selling the business.
