A postcard of Vail Pass. The postmark is dated October 22, 1951. Following the completion of Highway 6 over the pass, the Eagle County Commissioners asked the state highway board to name the pass Vail Pass, after Charles D. Vail, the chief engineer for the State Highway Department. The request, originally put forth in December of 1939, was approved in 1941.
