"The Doan ranch was purchased from Mr. Doan by James P. Gates in about 1899. When J. P. Gates and Kate first moved to the Doan place, they lived in the small house to the left until the big house was built. "This well constructed log building is located on the original Gore Road, between Toponas and Kremmling. Called the Rock Creek Ranch Road House, it was built by Jim Gates about 1900 and served as a stage stop with rooms and meals for travelers. Both floors had a porch running the length of the building.
