105) Lumber on Fancy Pass

MacDonald Knight standing on abandoned lumber on Francy Pass. The lumber was intended for the Gold Bug Mine gold mill building. When the bottom dropped out of mining in the area, supplies and equipment were abandoned in place.

Maloit Family home in Gilman, Colorado, taken in 1989, eight years after the town was closed. The house has ice flashing and a shingle roof, replacing the tar paper of the 1930s. Previously a 15-ft. high metal smoke stack sat on top of the chimney to improve draft for the kitchen range and space heater. Asbestos siding takes the place of tongue and groove siding.

The Red Cliff bus line was probably started away back, probably in the 1930s, by Mickey Walsh. He got hold of a big old sedan, probably a Cadillac or Pierce-Arrow, that 7 or 8 men could crowd into and started hauling miners to Gilman. I don't think it was much of a success as it kept breaking down....
