1st Lt. Charles Hemberger, 107th Engineers, U.S. Army 32nd Division "Red Arrow Division," deployed to France February 1918, World War I. Hemberger served as Eagle County Clerk and Recorder, 1916-1917; Eagle County State Representative, 1926-1930.
Hemberger acquired multiple parcels of land at Fulford by paying back taxes for them. He wintered on Cooley Mesa, between Gypsum and Eagle, naming his ranch the Red Arrow Ranch.

The vehicle appears to have tarps rolled up and attached to the sides, as well as a lantern, and several boxes and packs for other equipment. The vehicle is stopped along a narrow road along a fenceline. The third officer from left does have his foot propped on something stark white; this is not a photo error.

16) Mess Hall

A mess of men outside the mess hall at Camp Vail. George Frey wrote on the verso, "Mess Call 13th Service Camp Vail".
Despite its namesake, the Camp Vail in this photograph is unrelated to the Vail that would become a booming ski town near George Frey's hometown. Camp Vail was a training center commissioned in 1917 located in east-central New Jersey. Its namesake is Alfred Vail, who worked with Samuel Morse to develop the commercial telegraph....
17) Guard Detail

Despite the namesake, Camp Alfred Vail was at United States Army base Fort Monmouth in New Jersey and was a training center for the signal corps. The United States Signal Corps was founded in 1860 and has played integral roles in military communication,...
