A mud wagon prepared to start the run from Wolcott to Steamboat Springs. A more robust vehicle than a coach for use in difficult conditions such as mud, although conditions in this photo are good. Stacking hay using a horse team and a Mormon derrick on the J over J Ranch (now the 4 Eagle Ranch) north of Wolcott, Colorado. The Ranch was originally homesteaded by John Welsh and later run by his son-in-law, Charles Hartman. Tractors were never used on the ranch before it left the family in 1930.

49) McCoy lane

"The McCoy lane looking west. This 1912 photo [says 1911 on verso of photo] shows the front part of the Hotel on the left, [on the right] the blacksmith shop, the big red barn and the front of the old log barn and beyond it, the bridge across Rock Creek. The big barn, approximately fifty by sixty feet in size, was of frame construction and built by C. H. McCoy in 1902. It had stalls for twenty horses and a loft that held ten tons of loose hay....

57) Early Gypsum

Early Gypsum where tents provided original services: hotel, stores, saloon, restaurant. Meals at the Eagle Hotel were 35 cents, a bed was 25 cents. All of these services were located across from the train depot. The location is close to present day Railroad Ave. and Second Street.

58) Newell Buffehr

Newell Buffehr confronting a horse team pulling a hay wagon on the Buffehr ranch. Behind them, a man is standing on a haystack.
Newell was cited as one of six landowners in the Gore Creek Valley in 1959 by Dick Hauserman [Inventors of Vail p.7]: "John Hanson, Gust Kaihtipes, Pete Katsos, Henry Anholtz, Newell Buffehr, and Jay Pulis."
Newell and his wife Mary moved to Denver for Mary's health. She died in 1962.

"In some respects similar to the preceeding picture [1992.004A.084], but taken about 1924. Trees obstruct a view of the Hotel and several buildings in back of it that haver never shown in any of the many photographs of McCoy. The little building in the foreground has served as living quarters for a number of people in past years, but is presently the McCoy Post Office. The small white building on the left was built by the Brooks Brothers in 1914....
