A close up of the roof detail and windows on the shelter house at Notch Mountain. Constructed by the CCC between 1931 and 1933, it was built to provide a respite to those on pilgrimages to see the Mount of the Holy Cross. Caption by O.W. Randall: "Shelter house--has a beautiful fire place and wood always provided on hand for the public."

Earl Beck, standing at far left with his crew, was hired by the Forest Service as a foreman for the Civilian Conservation Corps. His crew built the shelter at Camp Tigiwon, the trail up Notch Mountain and the shelter on Notch Mountain. This photo was taken at Camp Tigiwon where the work crew was based. The men are posed in front of the flag pole. Their tents can be seen in the background.
